Cybersecurity and IT support
I enlisted in the US Army in July of 2000, right out of high school. I was selected to attend West Point in order to pursue a commission and while there, I completed a Civil Engineering track. After leaving active duty, I began searching for a new career. I ultimately settled on IT and gained several years of experience working with government systems with MWR IT department in Fort Sill, OK. The geographic scope of the organization provided many challenges for both security and support. MWR services are spread out over approximately a dozen facilities across the post supporting the full range of services MWR provides, childcare to recreation to survivor support services. Here, I learned that while I enjoyed the challenges of customer IT support, securing networks and systems in challenging environments was something I truly loved. In recent years, I’ve begun specializing in the security side of things, earning my Security+ certification, Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification, Certified Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI) certification, and beginning a second Master’s degree in Cyber Security and Information Assurance. I’m on track to graduate this spring (March 2019). My Capstone project is centered on alternative methods of computer security for remote systems such as SCADA units and embedded devices for which technical personnel may not be readily available. My focus has largely been on the geospatial considerations of the power grid (how to verify the geographic origin of a request in a trustless environment)
